Lotan came to Venturia by sea and hasn't been able to leave it. A pirate — or near enough — somewhere in his late thirties or forties, he sails into the city's story already owing forces larger than himself: he went looking for a Kraken, managed to offend it, and what happened after is not a story he tells. He carries an Eldritch Knight's discipline and a Warlock's borrowed fire, and the easy manner of a man who has talked his way off worse decks than this one.
Concept
A custom Fighter/Warlock hybrid — an Eldritch Knight drifting toward the Warlock's bargain. He's descended from a previous Curse of Strahd character.
The Pact
Lotan went into deep water looking for a patron and found a Kraken willing to deal — then offended it before the bargain was sealed. What happened after, no one is sure. He came back with a Warlock's borrowed fire and a debt he won't talk about, and the sea has not been safe for him since.
That's the reason he's been ashore since the day he arrived in Venturia.
Background
He sailed into Venturia from abroad and has stayed on land ever since. On the crossing he met a young gnome named Roxy, and when they landed he showed her the city — which markets to trust, which to watch.

- Roxanya "Roxy" — Met on the voyage to Venturia; he was her first guide to the city, and the friendship stuck.
