The Autumn Masquerade

The Autumn Masquerade is Venturia's most important social event: a citywide season of masks, bargains, performances, courtships, public spectacle, private meetings, and identities worn with absolute commitment.

Going unmasked during Masquerade is considered deeply unlucky. Going half-heartedly masked can be worse.

What Happens

Everyone wears elaborate masks. Major social connections are forged, business deals are sealed, feuds are paused or sharpened, and theater runs constantly across every district. The city becomes a continuous performance in which the line between role and self matters less than outsiders expect.

The final night culminates in a staging of The Tragedy of Vallombrosa, whose plot changes from year to year depending on which version of the legend the chosen company decides to perform.

Why It Matters

The Masquerade is not treated as costume play. In Venturia, a mask can be courtesy, confession, aspiration, defiance, or protection. During autumn, those meanings grow louder. A person who commits fully to a face may find the city more willing to believe them.
