The Tragedy of Vallombrosa is the play Venturia cannot stop staging about the story it cannot agree on. Every year during the Autumn Masquerade, the Amaranth presents a new version of the di Errante fall, the catastrophe, and the fog that swallowed Vallombrosa.
No two productions tell exactly the same story.
Civic Tradition
Directors choose which legend to privilege, which rumors to mock, and which old wounds to make beautiful for an audience already wearing masks. Residents argue over casting, staging, interpretation, and whether this year's version finally understood the story or missed the point completely.
The disagreement is part of the ritual. Venturia keeps the Tragedy alive by refusing to settle it.
What Everyone Agrees On
The di Errante family was powerful. Something catastrophic happened. The fog appeared afterward and never lifted. Everyone inside died or vanished. Everything beyond that depends on who is telling the story.
